Social Networking
There are many
uses for digital platforms and the technologies that are attached to it. The
most used social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are for
staying connected with friends. Taking a deeper look at Facebook, there are
many innovations and updates that was incorporated into the platform that we
see today. For example, there has been some changes to the privacy setting that
users may not be completely aware of. According to an article written by
Rebecca Greenfield, she states that the privacy setting of Facebook is so
complicated that even one of the Zuckerberg’s isn’t completely confident in
navigating it. Some individuals may think that their pictures are on private,
but in reality, friends of friends can see them. People may consider using any
platform without knowing all the implications of it as the “dark side”. Personally,
I believe that part of the responsibility is for the company to inform the
users exactly what has changed and what improvements were added. However, this
may seem unrealistic. On the flip side, it can also be partially the user’s
responsibility to search and spend more time in learning the new updates.
Either way, without learning exactly how to navigate a platform can be
dangerous in the sense that people are going to see something the user might
not necessarily want to show the entire online community.
On the other
hand, some social media platforms serve a different purpose. In the current
era, certain digital platforms like LinkedIn are being used by professional recruiters
to seek-out high-qualifying candidates. Networks like LinkedIn and Indeed are
used by professionals not to just seek-out candidates that are within a certain
proximity, but also there may be candidates further, with better credentials. (Langfitt)
By using professional digital platforms, it opens the doors to so many more
different opportunities. Not only is it being used by recruiters, but students
are using it to reach out to different professionals and even other students
that have experience in a field they may as well be interested in. In my
opinion, since the professional world is moving more toward digitalization, the
entire recruiting process of every profession may just solely be on the
Internet.
